Mission

The families and teachers of Children’s Corner Cooperative Nursery School educate and nurture the whole child in a safe, diverse, child-centered community, promoting a life-long love of learning.

Children’s Corner is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Our program has demonstrated a commitment to providing a high quality program for young children and their families.

The Program

The program at Children's Corner is child-centered and designed to address the following areas:
  • Individual development
  • Awareness of the needs of others; the ability to communicate and share experiences as members of a group
  • Intellectual curiosity stimulated by free play and some structured forms of learning, field trips, and special events
  • Creativity in play, arts and crafts, dance, and music
  • The development of the child's own interests by providing a flexible daily schedule
  • A preschool curriculum based on  The Creative Curriculum for Infants, Toddlers and Twos, 2nd Edition by Diana Trister Dodge, Sherrie Rudick and Kai-lee Berke (2006) and  The Creative Curriculum for Preschool by Diane Trister Dodge, Laura J. Colker, and Kate Heroman (2002)
  • A kindergarten curriculum based on The Common Core Standards, http://www.corestandards.org/
School is in session Monday through Friday from late August to mid May and follows the vacation schedule of MCCSC schools. Cooperative Structure

Parent Involvement at Children's Corner

As members of a cooperative preschool, our parents are committed to an active role in shaping and running the school. Parents assist their child's teacher in the classroom approximately once a month (2- or 3-day program), or twice a month (5-day program). Reduced participation is available for an additional fee.

Other parental responsibilities include:
  • Attendance at two business meetings a year
  • Attending a mid-year conference with their child's teacher
  • One cleaning night and
  • participation in a parent committee
Parents are also encouraged to contribute time and talent in a variety of ways, such as sharing individual hobbies and interests, assisting with children's parties, and serving as a room parent or special events coordinator.

Parents of enrolled children constitute the governing body of the school and elect members to a board of directors. All parents and staff are invited to attend monthly board meetings, and are encouraged to participate in the special committees occasionally formed by the board to accomplish specific projects, such the planning and execution of our playground mural.
